Girls, Inc. Progressive Dinner
at El Presidio
On Friday, September 26, GISA hosted a Progressive Dinner at El Presidio District in Downtown Tucson. Over forty (40) people attended the event. Starting with appetizers at Old Town Artisans, the group walked down the street for dinner at El Charro. Dessert was provided by Cafe a la C'ART at the Tucson Museum of Art. The weather was perfect, despite a few raindrops here and there. The food was delicious; the company friendly and engaging. By all accounts, a wonderful time was had by all. GISA expresses its gratitude to all who attended and helped to make this event a great successs.

Marana Healthy Moms Kickoff
On May 10, board members Marcia Jakabs, Sara Lindenbaum and Pat Wallace, and volunteer Jet George headed to Marana for its first annual Marana Healthy Moms Award Ceremony and Health Fair event. Jet made a wonderful on-stage presentation to the crowd about GISA's history and programs, and she even persuaded the audience to participate in a sample of how a fitness activity can be fun and painless! Pat and Marcia spent the morning talking with families and other vendors about GISA's programs while Sara put kids through soccer obstacle courses and hula hoop challenges. It was a beautiful morning, and everyone seemed to have a great time. We look forward to participating in next year's event. Many thanks also to board member Ellen Hezlep, who helped organize our participation in this event.

Spring Friendraiser
On April 17, GISA held a friend raiser at the lovely home of Alice Campbell in Skyline Country Club Estates. While enjoying refreshments, our guests learned about the mission and history of Girls Incorporated and GISA's current needs from board members Marian Abram and September Browning. We also were fortunate to have Jennifer Camano, a former Girls Inc. girl, who shared with us how Girls Inc. changed her life. A good time was had by our new friends and existing volunteers. GISA is interested in expanding our circle of volunteers, advocates and supporters, and we look forward to our next friend raiser which is being planned for late summer or early fall.

Women in Science and Engineering, Expanding Your Horizons Day
On March 1, 2008, GISA was proud to participate in the U of A's Women in Science & Engineering event for over 100 pre-teen and teen girls from Southern Arizona. Following the keynote speech by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the students attended hands-on workshops designed and lead by University of Arizona faculty and clubs as well as local Tucson organizations. GISA was invited to present a workshop on financial literacy and selected Girls Inc.'s Savvy Spenders. Each of our two workshops had 20+ girls in attendance. We involved the girls in activities featuring the fundamentals of various ways of borrowing vs. paying cash for an item and making budgeting choices that may fact them as new members of the workforce. The girls, the adults accompanying them, and the facilitators (volunteers with GISA) all benefited from the experience.
